The short version

Mafia Board Game is a free web app for playing Mafia (also known as Werewolf) with friends. One person starts a game at mafiaboardgame.org and gets a 4-letter room code with a QR code. Everyone else scans it on their own phone, picks a name, and takes a seat. The app then does everything a human moderator would: it deals secret roles, runs the night, announces the deaths, times the debate, and counts the votes. Nobody sits out, and no information ever leaks.

How it works — start to finish in under a minute

  1. Start a game

Open the app in any browser. Pick your name and animal — the person who starts the game plays too. You'll get a room code and a QR code.

  2. Everyone scans

Friends point their phone cameras at the QR code (or type the 4-letter code). No installs, no signups — each phone becomes that player's private, secret hand.

  3. Night falls

One tap begins the game. From there it runs itself: secret roles are dealt, the mafia choose a victim, the town debates and votes — and at the end the app replays the whole hidden story.

In one room — or over a video call

Mafia is at its best in one room, faces visible, accusations flying. That's what this app is designed for: the phones handle the secret parts while the arguing happens out loud.

But the room code works from anywhere. If part of the group is remote, they can join with the same 4-letter code, the host can screen-share the Table view on the call, and the daytime debate simply happens over video. Hybrid game nights work fine.

Round up 4+ friends and deal the cards

It takes about ten seconds to get a room code on screen.

Frequently asked questions

Is it really free?

Yes — completely. No downloads, no accounts, no paid roles, no ads in the middle of the night phase.

Do we all need to install something?

No. It runs in the browser on every device. The host starts a game; everyone else scans the QR code or types the room code.

How many players does it support?

4 to 20 in a single game. The role mix auto-balances as the group grows — more players, more mafiosi.

iPhone, Android, laptop?

All of them. It's a mobile-first web app — anything with a modern browser works, including a TV for the shared Table screen.

Can remote friends join?

Yes. The room code works from anywhere; pair it with a video call and screen-share the Table. The game itself doesn't care where players sit.

Is this the same game as Werewolf?

Yes — Mafia and Werewolf are the same game with different themes. If your group says "Werewolf," everything here still applies.
